What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a form of sexual dysfunction that can adversely affect the quality of a man's sex life. PE might occasionally complicate reproduction, but it can also adversely affect sexual satisfaction, both for men and their partners..

What are the causes of Premature Ejaculation?

Most cases of premature ejaculation do not have a clear cause. With sexual experience and age, men often learn to delay orgasm. Premature ejaculation may occur with a new partner. It may happen only in certain sexual situations or if it has been a long time since the last ejaculation. Psychological factors such as anxiety, guilt, or depression can also cause it. In some cases, it may be related to a medical cause such as hormonal problems, injury, or a side effect of certain medicines.

What are the symptoms of Premature Ejaculation?

The main symptom of premature ejaculation is the inability to delay ejaculation for more than one minute after penetration. However, the problem might occur in all sexual situations, even during masturbation.

Premature ejaculation can be classified as:

  • Lifelong (primary). Lifelong premature ejaculation occurs all or nearly all of the time beginning with your first sexual encounters.
  • Acquired (secondary). Acquired premature ejaculation develops after you've had previous sexual experiences without ejaculatory problems

How is Premature Ejaculation diagnosed?

In males with premature (early) ejaculation and no other medical problems, no specific conventional laboratory tests aid or affect treatment. Checking the patient’s levels of serum testosterone (free and total) and prolactin may be appropriate if premature ejaculation is observed in conjunction with an impotence problem. If depression or other conditions coexist, laboratory studies specific to depression or to another medical or psychological problem are appropriate.

Other conditions that should be considered in making the diagnosis of premature ejaculation include the following:

  • Severely delayed orgasm in the female partner
  • Adverse effect from a psychotropic drug
  • Presence of preejaculate
  • Erectile dysfunction

What are the treatments of Premature Ejaculation?

Common treatment options for premature ejaculation include:-

  • Behavioral techniques
  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • The pause-squeeze technique
  • Condoms
  • Medications
