Vestibulitis is a condition that causes redness and pain of the vestibule. Vestibulitis is an inflammation of this skin and the mucous secreting glands found in the skin. 

What are the symptoms of Vulvar vestibulitis?

Symptoms of Vulvar Vestibulitis:-

  • The urge to urinate frequently or suddenly
  • Severe pain with pressure (for example: biking, exercise, tight fitting clothes).
  • Vaginal entry such as tampon use or intercourse.
  • Burning, stinging, irritation or raw sensation within the vestibular area.
  • Vestibular redness

What are the causes of Vulvar Vestibulitis?

Causes for vulvar vestibulitis include:

  • Insufficient hydration
  • Insufficient lubrication
  • Emotional stress
  • Allergy/substance sensitivity
  • Sexual practice causes
  • Mechanical, chemical, hormonal, structural, environmental causes

How is Vulvar Vestibulits diagnosed?

Doctor or health care provider will examine the vulva and vestibule to identify the common skin changes seen with vulvar vestibulitis. Pain is usually felt if the vestibule area is touched with cotton tipped applicator. A sample of your vaginal discharge is collected and tested to rule out infection.

How Vulvar Vestibulitis is treated?

If no cause for your pain can be found, your doctor will help you manage the discomfort. They may recommend some of the following treatments:

  • pain-relieving creams, such as those containing lidocaine, applied directly to the skin
  • low-dose tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) to help block pain receptors
  • anticonvulsants, which may also work similarly to TCAs
  • biofeedback, in which sensors placed in the vagina send impulses to help you strengthen your pelvic floor muscles and teach you how to relax them
  • massage to relax tight muscles and contracted areas
  • cognitive behavior therapy, a type of psychological therapy, to help you manage chronic pain
