Lungs & Respiration Cystic Fibrosis

Children having cystic fibrosis (CF) have problems with eating, sleeping and complying with the physiotherapy. These problems may adversely influence health outcomes in children having Cystic Fibrosis(CF).

Cystic fibrosis(CF) is a transmitted (genetic ) disorder in this disorder, thick secretions form up in the lungs and because of this making it very difficult to breathe in children.  Notwithstanding frequent physical therapy to clear the secretions, also needs to set the infections.

To determine the prevalence of sleep and behavior problems in children having CF, researchers surveyed 117 Australian families of children having CF between the ages of 6 months and five years. Parents and caregivers of children reported sleeping problems (mild to severe) in 53 percent and eating problem behavior in 40 percent, higher rates than usual.

The researchers also evaluated the mental health of parents and caregivers of children. Thirty-three percent of them reported symptoms indicating  Anxiety, stress, and depression.  Also, more of them said about the sign of poor or terrible sleep quality.

The problems with sleeping, eating and physiotherapy adherence are common in children with CF. So, an intervention targeting child problem behavior and maternal mental health would be appropriate for CF families.
